11:54 pm - Upgrading songs to iTunes Plus

I've just spent much of the evening upgrading some of my long-ago iTunes purchases to iTunes Plus (for better sound quality and DRM-free-ness). But I see that only the songs I've actually paid money for are on the list of music that can be upgraded.

I have, over time, also downloaded a fair number of iTunes' featured free songs of the week. These too came to me in copy-protected can't-be-read-by-the-other-guys'-players .m4p format. Some of these songs I have come to REALLY LIKE, and I'd like to be able to take them with me if I ever switch to a competing music player. Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade the free downloads to iTunes Plus? Am I going to have to actually PURCHASE the songs that I once got for free, just to get them in a more useful format?

1:40 pm - Switched to Mac, now nothing works the same.

I just switched to a Mac (from PC running XP) and I'm mostly pleased with the transition, but now nothing in iTunes works the same. I've worked out most of it, but I can't seem to change my importing preferences. e.g. it's set to import songs as AAC files and I sometimes want MP3. I can't find the right menu to change it! I looked at preferences and advanced, but the importing option does not appear. All it wants to let me choose is where to put songs that I import, not how they're encoded. Where'd the importing options go?

ETA: Never mind! They moved importing preference to the general tab instead of the advanced one.

11:26 pm - iTunes ARGH

After I updated to the latest version of iTunes, I noticed it no longer organises the songs on my albums based on how the tracks are numbered. Or rather, it's done it to all complete albums I've uploaded on my iPod, but I have two albums I've compiled myself by adding a song or two whenever I find a new song I like. I've numbered them 1/13-13/13, but for some reason they're organised complete randomly on the album, which is annoying.

If I ask it to organised the albums by track number, I arranges ALL the songs on my iPod based on JUST the number, mixing albums. And the album isn't in the correct order on the iPod, still.

What gives?

Here's the situation:

I have a 30GB iPod, I don't know for the life of me which generation. 5th, I think? I got it a couple years ago. Anyway. I have a new Vista OS, having previously used my ipod and iTunes on XP. I installed the older version of iTunes, after having read about the crashes and failures of 7 & 8, but came to find out that in order to update my iPod with my new music, I needed to upgrade iTunes.

I can't get it to install. It comes up with a window telling me to pick a driver, then when I go to check what I've done wrong on the Apple website, they tell me I need something called a "iTunes 8 64-bit installer". Whatever that is.

Basically, could someone please help me get this right? I'm so frustrated, and all I want is my new music on my old ipod, with whatever version of iTunes I have to use.

5:41 am - Cannot change iTunes store anymore

Well I installed iTunes 8.0 today and everything is fine, except that i cannot change my iTunes store anymore with the button down below in the iTunes store window.

Whenever I want to change it to the US store it says: "Couldn't connect to store. Connection was reset due to time out of the connection. Check your internet connection and try again." (Which I did various times...nothing happend, I only get the same stupid error message)

My connection is absolutely fine and I don't know where there problem is.
I live in Germany and therefore I cannot buy music etc. in the US store ( I still don't get why Do I have to fly over to the US to buy a record legally? *shakes head*) but until now I could at least browse it (to be honest: most of the german music sucks and I normally browswed through the US store and checked if I could download the songs I liked from the german store later on). So , what can I do about it?

Maybe it has to do with the new "Genius" feature of iTunes? I activated and checked it out, disliked it and therefore eactivated it again. And since then the problem occured.

Suggestions, please?

8:01 pm - help? ipod in a coma

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me. I feel kind of stupid, like I'm sure there's an easy solution to this problem.

My Ipod is a 30G video. I've had it for about a year and a half, and I've never had any problems except for the fact that it freezes occasionally, which is of course easy to fix.

I charge my Ipod every night, whether or not the battery's dead. (wrong or right thing to do, by the way?) My Ipod was working just fine this morning. Then after work, when I tried to listen to it, it was frozen again. I took the steps to unfreeze it, but now, every time I try to turn it on, the Apple logo comes up, and then there's this picture of an unhappy Ipod with the Apple support website underneath. But the site was no help.

What...could possibly be wrong?

I am considering purchasing an iPod FM transmitter and am wondering what I should purchase. I have an iPod generation 2. Is there a specific model that I should be looking at or should consider?

1:49 pm - Slow iTunes and iTunes not syncing any artwork

I hope you fine people can help me because I've been trying for 3 days to get this to work and failing.

I have an ipod touch, bought recently. Everything was working fine with it and itunes, until something unfortunate happened to my laptop and everything had to be reinstalled, including windows. Clean wipe, but I had transferred my music folder onto an external harddrive before the wipe, so that got saved.
I now basically have a clean laptop, but since installing itunes it's been running slow. Nothing else running, yet it takes longer than it should to bring up menus, scroll etc. I have completely uninstalled it and reinstalled with a fresh download of the set up and it's still running slow.
The most annoying part is iTunes will not sync ANY artwork to my ipod touch. I've tried taking all the music and podcasts back off it, resyncing, resyncing just one playlist at a time, I've tried redoing the artwork, everything I can think of. I can see the artwork in itunes, I can even see it through the device on itunes, but absolutely no artwork is being transferred in the sync. I don't understand why!!

4:37 pm - A Question About Itunes

Hi! I'm new to this community, but not to ipods. I used to have a nano, but it broke, so now I have one of those bigger ones that can play videos and movies and all that stuff. Anyway, I have my itunes program on a big, desktop computer, but I'd like to put them on my laptop, just because it would be more conveniant. What do I have to do to do that? Shoud I just install itunes on my laptop and then hook up my ipod?

5:51 pm - Halp?

Kay, so I have a 5th generation ipod. And when I put songs on it, the artists don't appear in the 'artists' section but the songs are in the 'songs' section. How do I get them to show up under 'artists'?

Aaand sometimes, when I go to turn it off, I have to try 5 or 6 times.

3:22 pm - A question of playlists (help getting them back)

Ok, not entirely unlike the previous poster I have a question of ipods and itunes.

Recently I had a problem with a virus. I deleted everything infected but my system got ultra twitchy system. This ended up with me reinstalling windows.

I was able to save my itunes library but I didn't know I also had to save the library files (where the ratings and playlists are stored).

Is there ANY way to get these off of my Ipod itself and back into Itunes?

Thank you.

5:55 pm - iTunes update help

My old iTunes was on a computer that crashed so i lost all my music but it is still stored on my iPod. I now have a new computer with empty iTunes but I do not want to lose all my old music by syncing it with the new computer. Is there any way I can add new tunes to my iPod without losing the old ones?

7:48 pm - Bought Videos

Okay, I've bought a couple of movies and TV episodes off of iTunes, and I'd really like to be able to copy them to a disk, or convert them into a different format so I can play them on different programs on my computer. However, this does not seem to be working out for me so far. (Note: I have an iPod Classic)

Any tips?

12:10 am - iTunes store items doesn't snyc anymore :((

After the lastet Ipod software update for my IPod 80GB classic iTunes refuses to sync some songs I bought at the iTunes store to my IPod. I always get the message "cannot snyc items xyz to the Ipod because you are not allwoed to play these items on your iPod" (or sth similar than that) which is total bulls**t because I bought them at the iTune store legally some weeks ago and until now iTunes never refused to sync them to my Ipod! I payed money for them so I can expect that they snyc to my iPod the way it is suppoed to happen, right? I resetted my IPod already, but it didn't solve my problem. I de- and re-activated my iTunes store account for my computer ...nothing changed. After some time trying I'm not getting the error message anymore and if I want to transfer my bought items to my iPod nothing happens, no sny sign, nothing...

I read the Apple FAQ and support site for ages...no solution in sight. *SIGHS*

I haven't changed anything besides that stupid update for my IPod softeware which iTunes recommended some days ago. So, what went wrong? Any suggestions how to solve my problem?

9:50 pm - iPod 5th gen, won't turn on, can't be detected

Desperate times call for desperate measures...

I have a 30gb ipod video (5th gen) which my dad brought one and a half years ago.

I mainly use it during long rides, and it's never been dropped or manhandled in such a way that would damage it.

It was working just fine yesterday morning. I turned it off but when I decided to use it again a few hours later, it wouldn't turn on. I've only used one-third of the battery. I decided to plug it in my computer but my computer can't detect it. No sound, no pop-windows, nothing. I've tried using two different USB cables, but still the same results. I tried charging it but it's silent as a coffin. I just hope it's not as dead as a doornail...

Is it just the battery or something more serious?

Thank you very much.

12:07 am - "Various Artists" vs. actual artist

I just got an 80g classic ipod and am having a few problems with the way albums are listed in itunes vs. how they're listed in my ipod.

When I transfered all of my music from Windows Media Player to itunes some albums that had multiple artists weren't recognized as one album but many different ones. I really have just over 300 albums but because it separated them it showed I have about 350 albums.

I finally figured out that when I found all the tracks for one album and selected "part of compilation" for each track, they'd all end up together on one album, but under "various artists." I had to go through and change "album artist" to all the same artist and then the album shows up alphabetically by artist then album name... but only in itunes.

I've synced my ipod at least four times trying to get the albums to line up correctly like they do in itunes, but they won't line up. I've added and deleted albums and those have shown up but albums I've switched from various artists to the actual artist won't change the artist name on the ipod.
